I have a couch. It’s one of my favorite pieces and it was purchased for a specific spot on my home.
Of course – after several years… I need to move it. I don’t want to sell it, I love it! But it’s an unusual piece. It’s an old plum colored velvet couch with carved legs.
As chance would have it… I want a sofa instead of a chair in my master bedroom re-design.
The problem is I already have furniture and bedding in this room. I’m choosing new colors for the room walls and flooring.
I had a perfect color on the walls. The “coffee green” (an old Martha Stewart paint color) blended well with my bedding and the flooring and wood work worked well with this deep green color.
As you can see – the plum colored couch should blend well with the green color. Nature dictates all great color combinations.
But…
The new carpet looks pretty bad with the “old” green color. You can see the carpet, bedding and couch here –> Use large paint samples to choose colors
Other than education – How can I choose a paint color that will compliment the old bedding and the new (old) furniture?
I’ve always loved this chair combined with my russet or terra-cotta color tile
This rug combines a variety of greens – russet – plum and black.
It even has a tiny bit of slate blue.
The beige center would make a good “safe” wall color… but we are going for the russet!

Hello,
Your bedroom is so pretty and it looks so cozy!! What are those pretty scrolly things on the right? Did you paint those or are they stickers or wallpaper?
Have a wonderful day
Dont think there is enough plum or blue in the rug to cause attention to pull the two items together. the black needs to be that color royal blue not black. Think you need a different accent rug ~ and buy one that has the exact colors you want in the room, that will work better
I have been thinking about these colors you have, if you purchase a large area rug in a neutral tone as the color in the middle of the other rug, and large enough to be in front of the couch and the end of your bed, then pull the plum into the many pillows on the bed, and use the blues to accent in the room, vases or pillows on the couch itself, maybe some beads on the window treatment in the royal blue and some very large plum color flowers in a large glass vase on the dresser or bedside with some green accents as well, in leaves or beading … just a thought
This so cool as I am in the process of something very similar I love your e-mails each week or so and hope you will continue sending them as they are so inspirational. Thank so much Gayle
I think the russet is a good choice. It will give the room and southwestern flavor but will also be warm and inviting.
A sure winner to use with Plum is any shade of Blue. It is next to plum on the color wheel, as russet (a shade of red) is on the other side of plum (purple) on the color wheel. Neighboring colors on the wheel are always a guaranteed winner.
That is a gorgeous sofa. I think I’d redo a whole house to go with furniture that beautiful If I was lucky enough to own it. LOL I love your newsletter. I get a lot of good therapy from playing with color. Years ago I was so desperate for color that I painted my bathroom with food coloring.
LOL It actually came out great. Keep up the inspiring work.
Thanks,
Erin
